 Silk Smitha is one of the famous Indian film actress who acted in Malayalam, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi films. She was discovered by an Indian director Vinuchakravarthy at a flour mill. After that he renamed her Smitha & his wife taught her English. She learned dancing from another teacher. After garnering much notice and acclaim with her first major role in the Tamil movie Vandi Chakkaram, in 1979, Smitha assumed the name "Silk," after her character's name in the movie. In 1996, Smitha was found dead in her Chennai apartment. The previous year she had tried to become a film producer. Financial problems, disillusionment in love and an alcohol dependency apparently led to depression. It is suspected that Smitha committed suicide.

She left the school at the age of 8 due to the financial constraints of the family.

Her film career began accidently while she settled at the house of her aunt who lived in Madras(Chennai). Popular director Vinu Chakravarthi discovered her talent and renamed her as Smitha. She got the first break in the Tamil Movie Vandi Chakram in 1979. The character played by her in the movie was named as 'Silk' which was further carried as her official name.
Smitha entered the Malayalam movie Industry with the movie Inaya Thedi in 1979. Smitha became the hot talk as many movies were produced only to keep the presence of her. She went on to act in Telugu, Tamil, Malayalam, Kannada and a few Hindi films. Layanam one of her Malayalam movie was remade into Hindi titled as Reshma Ka Jawani.
Smitha was found dead on 23rd September 1996 in her apartment in Chennai. It is said that smitha commited suicide because of financial problem, broken love affair and high dependency on alcohol which had led to depression.

She entered the film industry as an extra[1] actress, and first got noticed for her role as "Silk" in the 1979 Tamil film Vandichakkaram. She became a sought-after 'erotic actress' in the 1980s and in a career spanning 17 years, she appeared in over 450 films in Tamil, Malayalam, Telugu, Kannada and Hindi languages. On September 23, 1996, she was found dead in her apartment in Chennai, apparently having committed suicide.
 Early life
Born as Vijayalakshmi, in a poor family in Eluru, Andhra Pradesh, Smitha left school after her fourth standard (in India, at about 8 years of age) due to the family's financial constraints. Her striking looks burdened her with uninvited attention, and her family married her off at a very young age. When she was ill-treated by her husband and in-laws, she ran away to Madras (now known as Chennai) and started living with an aunt.
